At 8am on a Thursday morning instead of chomping down my very average fruit and nut and spilling milk on my top in the usual manic-morning-rush, I was leisurely sauntering through London’s Borough Market, making my way to to one of London’s top foodie destinations for a delicious breakfast.
Perched on top of the market, above the stalls selling brightly coloured fruits and vegetables sits the beautifully light restaurant, Roast. With tall windows, an open-plan layout and split levels it is a very pretty space. On eye level with the trains running from London Bridge to the south of England, you can watch them snaking over the market as commuters line up for their morning coffee from a bird’s eye view.
The entrance to Roast is in the middle of the market via a lift. We were professionally greeted at the reception desk and shown to our table near the window. At 8am the restaurant was busy with London’s suits enjoying a working breakfast. Happily, we were purely there for pleasure. And a pleasure it was indeed!
The menu offered a good variety from delicious fruit salads to the full English and omelettes. While on the expensive side for your first meal of the day, the prices are not obscene: a main breakfast dish and coffee is going to set you back about £15. I opted for the Eggs Florentine and a refreshing drink with apple, elderflower and mint which I had slurped up in about 30 seconds.
In keeping with the professionalism we experienced when we arrived, our waiters were attentive and helpful. Our food was steaming in front of us within 10 minutes; beautifully presented and tasty. The vegetarian sausages were the only let down sadly – they were dry and a little tasteless.
By 8:55 we had paid and were back walking through the market to our nearby offices, ready to embrace the day having had a lovely luxurious start; top totally milk-free and not a spot of fruit and nut in sight.
